Forisk Consulting

ASTM International Wood Committee Presents Top Annual Award to David Kretschmann

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., June 13, 2016ASTM International’s Committee on Wood (D07) has presented its top annual award – the Award of Merit – to David Kretschmann of the USDA FS Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wis., U.S.A. The prestigious award, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest recognition for individual contributions to developing standards.

 The committee honored Kretschmann for his outstanding contributions to D07. He has been a member of ASTM since 1987 and has received the L.J. Markwardt Award in 2005 and the Award of Appreciation in 2015.

 In addition to ASTM, Kretschmann is a member of the, the Society of Wood Science and Technology, and the Forest Products Society.

Passing of Dr. Terry Sellers, Jr.

My wonderful Dad, Terry Sellers, Jr., died suddenly and peacefully last night. We are mourning our loss, but he is having a blast dancing a jig in his Scottish kilt. We imagine him engaged in theological discussions with the Almighty, joking around with Mary Magdalene, editing his genealogy books, and asking lots of questions. :)

To celebrate his life, we will have services (we don’t know when, as we have to give family time to arrive in town) both at Lester Memorial UnitedMethodist Church in Oneonta, AL, and at Long Memorial United Methodist Church in Cordova, AL. We’ll keep you posted on when.

In the meantime, he would prefer and we request that, instead of flowers, you make a donation in his memory to the college scholarship fund at his and Mom’s high school :

Postdoctoral scientist

The Wood Material Science and Technology group is looking for a motivated

postdoctoral scientist in the area of wood science and chemistry.

The research in the group is mainly focusing on different wood modification techniques as well as on fundamental research topics such as water vapour sorption of biomaterials, especially sorption kinetics and changes in ultrastructure. We are continuously co-operating with industry and national/foreign universities. At the moment we have several on-going projects related to wood modification e.g. thermal modification in high pressure reactor, veneer surface modification, fire retardant modification etc. We have excellent facilities in the school of chemical technology (http://www.bioeconomyinfra.fi/)

Job description

Depending on the interest and expertise of the candidate he/she will be working in projects on wood chemical modification using standardized analysis techniques as well as confocal Raman microscope, DVS ET1 / Intrinsic etc. Strong background in wood chemistry and spectroscopical analyses are needed. The position is available from 01.07.2016 onwards, but latest on 01.09.2016.

Requirements

The eligible candidate should have:

  • PhD in suitable field with excellent results
  • High motivation for research
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English
  • Experience in carrying out independent research and working in a team environment
  • Previous scientific publications are considered a plus

Skills, knowledge and abilities in the following areas are highly desirable:

  • Experience in spectroscopical analyses, such as IR and Raman spectroscopies
  • Good understanding of wood structure and chemistry
  • Experience in raise competitive funding

Salary

Salary is determined according to the salary system of Aalto University.

Associate professor or professor in wood technology

The Department of Ecology and Natural Resource Management at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant permanent position as associate professor or professor in Wood technology

Department of Ecology and Natural Resource Management (INA) has about 100 employees and undertakes teaching, research and dissemination within the fields of biology and ecology, natural resource management, renewable energy, nature based tourism and forest sciences. Wood technology is an important part of the forest sciences at INA, and includes research on raw materials, industrial processes, products and markets in the value chain from growth of the tree to the forest products markets. Currently, the department has ca. 370 students, and approximately 50 PhD-students. The employees of the department are significant participants in their respective fields of expertise, both nationally and internationally and have a high level of scientific production. Main tasks

  • Research objectives for this position cover topics in the value chain from forest to timber-based forest product markets, with emphasis on sawmilling industry, its production processes, technology and economy, consumer preferences, products and markets.
  • The position has an essential role for teaching in bachelor and master forestry courses with special focus on forest industries. Supervising master and PhD students will be an important duty.
  • The person to be employed is expected to participate in administrative duties and take part in the general aspects of NMBU’s affairs.

Academic qualifications

The successful candidate must have a doctoral degree and document broad qualifications on research within several of the above mentioned tasks.

  • In addition to scientific qualifications, teaching experience, pedagogical and administrative competence will be emphasized. If the person employed does not hold formal competence in pedagogics, he/she is obliged to complete NMBU’s course in university pedagogy within 2 years after appointment.

Job Description

Forisk works as a team of collaborative researchers that cover areas of overlapping expertise to meet the needs of the FRQ and client projects. The Analyst reports directly to the VP of Client Services and supports the Forisk team, including the Director of Forest Operations Research. This is a full-time position based in Athens, Georgia. The primary responsibilities are:

Support data systems for the FRQ and client requests, including forest supply analysis using U.S. Forest Service data, mill updates for Forisk’s shapefiles database, and reports from Forisk’s proprietary Wood Bioenergy US database;

Support price forecasts and market analysis for consulting studies;

Support timberland ownership and forest management research;

Generate charts, tables, and maps to support consulting studies and FRQ subscribers; and

Contribute to and co-author on-going, in-house Forisk research related to timber markets, timberland investments and forest technology.

While the above responsibilities represent the basic tasks of the Analyst role, the position includes internal and external training, education and opportunities for independent projects.

Ideal Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

The successful candidate will have, at a minimum:

BS degree in forestry, natural resources, or economics/finance;

Direct experience with or exposure to forestry, natural resource or agriculture operations, research or markets is preferred;

At least 1 year of direct experience with economic analysis, forecasting, or research, and the technical and software skills required to conduct this analysis independently;

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and GIS software; and a

Proven track record of success, based on prior work experience, achievements, references and/or research.
