Assistant Professor and Extension Wood Products Specialist

Essential Job Duties: The Department of Forest Biomaterials at NC State University is seeking applicants for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track Wood Products Extension and academic (teaching and research) faculty position. The preferred candidate will have knowledge/skills/industrial experience in one or more of the following areas related to Wood Products and similar fields:

  • Innovative techniques and methods for recycling wood-based materials
  • Markets for the recycling and/or reuse of wood products
  • Housing and/or wood product construction
  • Renewable/sustainable materials or green building technology
  • New building techniques and designs to facilitate deconstruction

The successful applicant will be part of an eight-person sustainability team (three Wood
Products Extension faculty and five Sustainable Materials and Technology (SMT) academic faculty). Major responsibilities include developing an innovative extension program for the wood products industry and teaching one undergraduate class per year in the Sustainable Materials and Technology program. The delivery methods of extension and educational materials could include workshops, seminars, webinars, demonstrations, case studies,
publications, etc. The incumbent will also be expected to generate contracts and grants to fund extension relevant projects that can support graduate students and expand the impact of their extension program.

Other Responsibilities: This is a split appointment position and the successful candidate will be expected to divide their time between extension and extension related research, teaching and service activities. It is expected that the major portion of the incumbent’s time will be spent on their extension program. Salary and start-up support will be commensurate with qualifications.

 

Minimum Required Education/Experience: A Ph.D. level degree in wood products, sustainability, engineering, environmental science/technology, or related area is required. The successful applicant must

have the ability and desire to develop and conduct an effective extension and education program in cooperation with faculty, staff, and industry. The candidate must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing using innovative technology transfer techniques. This position will be based in Raleigh but the incumbent must be willing to travel throughout North Carolina

Director of the Georgia Forestry Commission

Director of the Georgia Forestry Commission

The Georgia Forestry Commission is seeking applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Georgia Forestry Commission.  The Director is responsible for supervision of 650+ personnel with an annual operating budget of more than $60 million.  In addition, the Director serves as administrative officer and executive secretary of the Commission and represents the Commission in other forestry related organizations. The Georgia Forestry Commission traces its roots back to 1925 when the Georgia legislature created the Forestry Department to coordinate efforts to suppress wildfires.  Since then the Commission has evolved to touch all aspects of Georgia's vast forest resources.  The main office of the Commission is located in Macon, Georgia.  The Commission operates 128 offices across the state which includes 112 county protection units as well as an Urban Community Forestry Program, a Forest Products Marketing Program, a Nursery, and Air Operations.  The mission of the Georgia Forestry Commission is to provide leadership, service, and education in the protection and conservation of Georgia’s forest resources.

Candidates for this position should possess the following:

 Ability to develop and successfully communicate a vision of leadership in establishing and maintaining a successful top level forestry organization;

 Ability to work effectively with legislative and executive branches of state government;

 Demonstrated leadership and communication skills to work effectively with forest landowners, industry, the environmental education community, and a wide range of natural resource agencies and NGO partners;

 Demonstrated experience with budgetary development and management; and

 A Bachelor of Science degree in forestry or significant experience in forest management.

A degree in forestry is not required.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
