Airlines:   Most major airlines fly to/from Vienna International Airport.  Major carriers include:  Swiss, KLM , United, British Airways, Austrian, Lufthansa, Air Canada, Air France, and SAS.

Attire:  Business to business casual for meetings.

Business hours:  9:00 to 17:00  Banks are open from 9:00 to 17:00 Monday-Friday.   Shopping:  9:00 to 17:00.  Sundays are normally closed.

Climate: The Slovak climate lies between the temperate and continental climate zones with relatively warm summers and cold, cloudy and humid winters. There are almost no extremes below minimal −20 °C (−4 °F) or above maximal 37 °C (99 °F). The weather differs from the mountainous North to the plain South.  Average for June is 75 °F (24°C)  for high and 50 °F (11°C)  for low

Currency:  Money can be exchanged in some hotels, airports, train stations, and banks.  The rate varies.  Banks are open Monday through Friday, 9:00 to 17:00.  If you have a debit or credit card, cash can be withdrawn from automatic teller machines (ATM), called bankomats. There is one located in the downtown square in the Billa grocery store.   Local currency is Euro.  For example: 1 USD = 0.7771 EUR or 1 EUR = 1.2868 USD.  Check conversions from other currencies.   The use of credit cards is less widespread than in the UK or USA and not all shops, hotels, or restaurants accept them.  EuroCard/MasterCard and Visa are the most popular.

Electricity:  220V, 50 Hz

Health:  No immunizations are required to enter Slovakia, but generally it is a good idea to make sure your tetanus, diphtheria and polio vaccinations are up to date before traveling.  

Insurance:  The Society of Wood Science and Technology is not responsible for the insurance of participants against personal injuries, sickness and theft or property damage incurred during the convention period.  Concerned participants should obtain insurance coverage. 

Mobile phones are GSM.  You can buy prepaid SIM cards if your phone accepts them.  There is a TMobile and Orange store in the main square.  You can buy SIM cards at the Vienna airport also. You can also rent/buy temporary cell phones.   Cell phone rental/purchase: www.mobal.com

Tipping:  Tipping is not compulsory in Slovakia, but in practice it is common in sit down restaurants, where rounding up the bill or leaving around 10% tip is common. The tip is given directly to the waiter (give him/her the amount of money on the bill including the tip, when he/she starts to give you change back, say "It's ok"), not left on the table in most establishments. Outside restaurants or bars tipping is unusual.
